About

The mission

Forecast New York is the definitive portal for the Empire State's weather and climate — built to make the official National Weather Service forecast fast, clean, and highway-clear for all 62 counties, from Montauk Point and the harbor up the Hudson to Mount Marcy, and west along the Thruway to Niagara.

New York is 400 miles wide and holds nearly every kind of weather the eastern United States has. Syracuse is the snowiest large city in the country and Tug Hill above it is the snowiest ground east of the Rockies; the Adirondack hollows run to 40 below; Long Island took the deadliest hurricane in Northeast history and the worst of Sandy's surge; the Hudson Valley spends the winter arguing with the rain–snow line; and the Finger Lakes are deep enough to hold the frost off a vineyard until November. Forecast New York is built around that spread.

The design language

The look borrows from the American Interstate system — the reflective paper, the green guide signs, the blue service signs, the brown recreation signs, and the red-white-and-blue route shields — set in Overpass, the typeface drawn from the Highway Gothic lettering on those signs. New York takes a Hudson Valley bluestone paper and a Concord grape accent — the color of the Lake Erie grape belt, which exists because the lake holds the frost off Chautauqua's slopes into November. It is the right system for this state: the Thruway is I-87 and I-90 end to end, and the Northway, the Southern Tier Expressway and the Long Island Expressway are how New Yorkers actually say where they are.

Metro & region sites

New York is covered close-up by 8 region sites, each on its own subdomain of forecastnewyork.com — the same maps, the same live radar and the same climate record as this site, drawn to one metro or region instead of the whole state, with a page for every city in it. They are part of Forecast New York, not separate sites: /about on any of them lands back here.

Companions & the network

New York touches five states and two provinces. Two states are live: Forecast New Jersey, across the harbor and up the Hudson, and Forecast Pennsylvania along the whole southern line — both tinted in their own accents on the hero map and clickable from it — and Forecast Canada takes Ontario and Québec along the lakes and the St. Lawrence. Forecast NYC covers the five boroughs and the tri-state metro in its own right. Across the eastern line, Vermont, Massachusetts and Connecticut are all live as states of Forecast New England, and are tinted and clickable on the hero map too. The rest of the Forecast <State> network is part of the same system.
